Caught short: Bill wished he had used the loo in the bar before walking home!
“Nice for this time of year” It’s an age old expression often used by the British who are used to lousy weather at any time of the year, not just the winter months. With this in mind, a lot of the British head off for winter breaks in sun kissed places hoping that it will at least be warm. Some even decide to go and live abroad in the hope of never having to scrape the ice off the windscreen of the car or shovel mounds of mucky looking snow from the front of the house.
I am one of the latter, I decided that a place in the sun was the thing for me and so I headed south to the Spanish province of Malaga and settled north of the Costa del Sol in a small Andalucía village called Villanueva del Trabuco, just outside to be exact, right in the middle of some wheat fields with great mountain views. My days of freezing my bum off were long gone. Or, so I thought!
December 2011 was exceptional, one of the warmest Decembers on record with very little rain and daytime temperature of 20ºC and that’s in the mountains where I live, the coast was warmer still. January 2012 followed in much the same vein, with a couple of day’s rain but brilliant sunshine and warm temperatures, well above the norm. “This just gets better! “ I said to herself as we sat outside supping coffee in the sunshine.
Oh well! I had to open my big mouth. This week Europe, not just Spain but Europe as a whole has been slapped with a nasty cold snap that has sent temperatures in some parts of Spain to -11ºC!! Places like Barcelona and the Basque country are freezing their butts off and even here in Malaga, close to the Costa del Sol (Coast of the Sun) we have -5ºC in places such as Antequera and Ronda. The daytime is sunny but there is a wicked wind that nips at exposed parts.
It just goes to show; just because you live somewhere sunny does not mean that the Screw up Fairy won’t visit you for a few days. Never mind, we will be back to normal by the end of the week.
