A typical Spanish Chiringuito |
Chiringuitos on the Spanish Costa del Sol have had some good news this week. The minister in charge of the Environment, Sñr Miguel Arias Cañete has indicated that the law that governs what happens on the Spanish coasts (Building, planning, businesses etc) “Ley de Costas” or “Law of Coasts” is both unreliable and unfair and could be seen to be penalizing businesses instead of helping them and there is no indication that the environment is any better or worse off for the present laws.
For some time now, businesses and tourists alike have been worried that the Chiringuito or beach bar / restaurant would be a thing of the past due to regulations governing certain practices (all bullshit and red tape) and that Chiringuitos would not be given new licenses to trade. This would have affected 400+ businesses and impacted on 20,000 jobs all along the coast.
Now, the government are saying that “non-harmful economic activities will be allowed” and that the new laws would be more realistic and helpful, rather than harmful. This is brilliant news for businesses and tourists as the Chiringuito is as much a part of Spanish culture as Paella, Bullfighting or cocking up your electrics.
Hoorah for common sense.
