Is the Grass Greener

A lot of people move to a new country thinking that the problems in their lives will simply disappear, that a change of scene and a fresh start will somehow make your life better. I’m sorry to say that this won’t necessarily happen. If you didn’t like your wife and husband in your own country, you aren’t going to like them better somewhere new!

 The reality is that whilst moving or even buying a holiday home is a wonderful experience and for most people a huge amount of fun it can be stressful. In a new country everything is different; that’s the appeal but also the stress. A new language, new laws, new ways of doing things. Even the most mundane tasks take much, much longer than “at home”. When I first moved to Spain every time I paid a bill, got a document from the town hall or even changed a gas bottle seemed like a major victory. Personally I got enormous pleasure from finding my way into this new life but there is no denying that at times when things had to be done urgently it was difficult!

 It also has to be said that not everything in your new home will be done better than in your old one. It’s best not to get hung up on this. Forget “better or worse” and think “different”! For my part I never understood the siesta in Spain. Sure in August the middle of the day is hot, but what about the rest of the year? I’m an Englishman born and raised and I will never be able to have a siesta BUT I support it’s continuance 100%! Why? Because it’s part of the Spanish way of life. I moved to Spain to enjoy that way of life. I loved how relaxed people are, how they have time to chat (even from their car window with a queue behind), how people and family matter and how generally unhurried the pace of life is. If that means I have to accept the siesta then so be it!  You can’t have it both ways; streamlined super efficiency, extended office and shop opening hours and a go getting entrepreneurial drive doesn’t go with a relaxed, laid back lifestyle! So next time your shopping trip is brought to a sudden halt when the shops stop for that extended lunch break and siesta, don’t get angry or frustrated – go for lunch!

 So the moral is that you should see any move abroad as a challenge and an adventure, not a panacea. It won’t make your problems go away but could give you a lot of pleasure, fun and satisfaction!

Niebla in Huelva

A beautiful, little known pueblo on the banks of the Rio Tinto in Huelva province. Easy to get to, harder to leave!

Huelva is Andalucia's westernmost province and abuts Portugal and the Algarve. It is understandably best known for the incomparable Cota Doñana nature reserve and El Rocio romaria. I shan't describe either of these attractions because they are well covered elsewhere and a visit to Google will provide all the information and photos you will ever need, and more! Less well described however is the rest of the province and this has been to it's advantage. Huelva and the Costa del la Luz have escaped the over development that scarred parts of the other costas and the invasion of mass tourism and investors seeking a quick buck. The result is pristine beaches, unspoilt scenery and a very warm welcome from local people to whom foreign visitors and residents are a pleasure rather than a plague.

My local partner, Bob Allaway lives near the beautiful, historic, town of Niebla on the banks of the Rio Tinto and will be delighted to introduce you to the local way of life as well as show you houses. This is how he describes his home town

Our village is a typical Spanish pueblo, the locals are very friendly and helpful.

The older part of the village is surrounded by a large castle wall, and has seven arched entrances, as years have passed the village has grown outside these walls. There is not a lot left of the original castle, the church is still there and has a very interesting dungeon that can be accessed, there is also an outdoor theatre within the walls.

A great location, as it is not over populated and has everything you would need for daily living, i.e. banks, post office, chemist,  supermarkets, including a covered fish, meat and vegetable market, bakeries, and lots of café/bars, 24hr medical available and a good bus route, plus a small train station. I love the fact that you can order for example any white goods in the morning and they are delivered and installed that afternoon! In Niebla you are a person not a number.

Fiestas are the norm here and they include the Sardine Fiesta, Carnival, Three Kings, Semana Santa and many more. Horse’s always play a large part in the celebrations here along with full, traditional Spanish dress making every fiesta are a wondrous sight to see.

For larger shops and other entertainment Huelva and Seville are only 30 minutes away. There is a large choice of safe sandy beaches close by, plus the Doñana National Parke, Golf courses etc.

If you fancy a weekend away, Portugal is one hour plus to the border and offers some great value breaks.
There are several international airports within easy reach, including Faro in Portugal (about 90 minutes), Seville (about an hour), Jerez (about 1 hour 40 minutes).
